LAS VEGAS, Nev. (January 24, 2022) – Las Vegas played host for the first time to the West Coast AAU Football National Championship this year on January 15th and 16th. For a few teams, what happened in Vegas, came home with them in the form of a National Championship trophy and ring.
Teams from California, Nevada, and Texas were represented and at least one team from each state found a way into the championship game on Sunday. 19 teams across 5 divisions took to the field with a dream of winning the 2022 AAU National Championship.
The development of AAU Football was on full display in Las Vegas. 6u Flag Football, 6u, 8u, 10u, and 12u Tackle Football all competed and the games were exciting all weekend long.
“It was a great diversity of teams,” said Rod Tanner and Ron Bellamy, Tournament Directors and AAU Football National Committee Members. “All three states were represented in title games and there were some very competitive games on the championship day.”
The winners this weekend include:
6u Flag – Waco Modocs, out of Texas; the team went undefeated for the entire season and knocked off the San Hi Raiders, out of California.
6u Tackle – San Hi Raiders, out of California; the team out of San Bernardino took down their same state counterparts, Antelope Valley Colts.
8u Tackle – Las Vegas Blackwolves; the home town team went undefeated on the weekend and beat out the Harbor Pilots out of California in a close game.
10u Tackle – Las Vegas Apex Predators; the Las Vegas Valley team beat the Waco Southern Panthers, out of Texas, to claim the title.
12u Tackle – Waco Southern Panthers, out of Texas; the Panthers dominated the weekend and defeated the Hawaiian Gardens football team out of California.
The weekend in Las Vegas also played host to the 2022 AAU Football Cheer West Coast National Championship. The event was held on Saturday, January 15th at the Rio Hotel and Casino. 6 divisions competed across multiple age groups (6u, 8u, 10u, 14u Stunt, 14u Non-Stunt, and Dance Division).
California, Las Vegas, Michigan, New York, and Texas were all represented at the first Hybrid Football Cheer National Championship.
The Central Texas Junior Greywolves 8 and under division took home the Grand Champion trophy for Session 1. The Killeen Cove Chiefs 10 and under division took home the Grand Champion title for Session 2.
A Football Cheer group even took part in the annual Martin Luther King, Jr Day parade in Las Vegas the following Monday, January 17th.
